Holiday In Bali: Surf'n

Pulau Biru Surf  near Kuta 2019
Waking up in a different room, in a different country, and once stepping outside the hotel not having Wi-Fi/airtime/data can be a bit unnerving. It can be done though… Just not before the guava juice, eggs, and java (coffee). Which was delicious – the coffee. Down the hatch as some say. Remember folks, I had no plan other than to meet up with Sveta. Yet, we are both here for a couple of more days. Time to see and do things.

One of the best aspects of meeting international mates is that I’ve found they often have a much more adventurous and wandering spirit than I do. Fancy words for I didn’t plan shit and she was out to explore. I owe everything I saw and experienced in Bali to this wonderful woman.

Buan and I 2019
In America, we don’t really barter too much – not like in other parts of the world. Indonesia is no stranger to the barter system. Even the motorbike ride Buan gave me had no set price. Next on the docket that January morning in Kuta was planning on what to do. She took the lead and called our mutual friend and concierge of sorts – Buan. All negotiations she handled with a kind, “Oh no… too much…” till the price was good.

For damn good prices, Buan set up all sorts of activities. First on the list… Surfing lessons. Indiana and Kazakhstan are landlocked areas. I doubt she had ever surfed before, and I know I never tried either. Buan picked us up right outside the Bedrock Hotel and drove us to Pulau Biru Surf. A Surfing Lesson Spot for some lessons from the FUN SURF instructors. After a few plastic chairs sitting under an umbrella, we found these guys had us dive into a stash of the long sleeve under-armor material shirts. The first lesson was on the sand and practicing getting up. Second, in the water as they pushed us on our boards and got up. Third, lesson… Drink with the instructors. Then try again. It was an awesome and tiring experience. Before setting off on our next adventure it was time to rinse the sand and surf off for a small fee at the toilet facilities. All cash based of course. Pictures smiles, and local beer was had.  Locals walked about selling massages and their handmade wares while there were rubbish and debris piles nearby. But not a problem to focus on. Seriously heaps of fun with the FUN SURF crew.

Taxi to dinner. Dinner was either at Potato Head or at a place called Ku De Ta. The taxi driver suggested Ku De Ta it is. Sveta negotiated the price for the fare… If he got us there faster, we would pay more. Infinity pool overlooking the Indian Ocean. A DJ spinning some very lo-fi lounge-styled beats. Folks, if you need an example check out Chris Luno’s set on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgd-95t-jR4). Some subtle swaying from the pockets of people on the ground level. Some dipping into the infinity pool overlooking the ocean. As for us, we were guided to the second level overlooking all. Honestly, the best spot in this place.
Ku De Ta Seminyak 2019

Ku De Ta Seminyak 2019
For food, smashed a pepperoni pizza. Drinks? Yes, drinks were had. The sun was setting making quite the picturesque view. The multiple pinks and blues on the horizon were something straight out of a postcard. Only a sunset in the desert could be more beautiful than that one in the Indian Ocean. While the night was just starting in the heart of Seminyak I think we both had the same idea about getting some rest for the next day. Surfing is exhausting. After all, we had more to see. More to do. It is a holiday in Bali, and we just began to scratch the immense surfaces of culture, history, and nature.
